construction costs

I just did some SERIOUS number crunching for building pedestals. I came up with a few options, based on a plan for having 4 sets of 3 pedestals that fit inside each other, for the ideal total of 12 pedestals.

The estimates are on the slightly high end. (2X4's can be slightly cheaper and save about $20 for 12 pedestals)
I’ll share all the sketches and plans on Wed.
Home Depot prices.

The Options are:
Stained and poly’ed pine: $290.62 (including sponge brushes: $295.62)
Poly’ed pine: $276.26 (including sponge brushes: $281.26)
White painted MDF: $250.39 (including rollers, trays, frames: 268.74)
Black Painted MDF: $269.89 (including rollers, trays, frames: 288.24)

  2. These prices are scary considering the pricing we have for the printing and wall construction :(

  3. has anyone made a serious budget for walls?
And touch-up paint for the existing walls?

  4. I have an AD from LOWE's for Olympic Interior Latex Flat Paint Gallon for only $7.97
    2x4 wood is $2.77 each.
    2x3's for $1.48 each

  5. I'm anxious to see the building plans for the walls and the pedestals... these seem like very high estimates to me.

  6. the large cost is obviously lumber.
Each set of 3 pedestals requires 8 2x4 studs (96" each) and 2 sheets of either MDF or sanded pine plywood

    the pedestals range in size:
    1.5'x1.5'x4'tall
    1.25'x1.25'x3.5'tall
    1'x1'x3'tall

    the pine sheets: 22.88/ea
    MDF: 19.27/ea
    2x4 studs: 1.65-2.29/ea

  7. I've found a way to cut out two 2x4's, as well as 1/2 sheet of plywood/MDF, provided that we do make a total of 12 pedestals.

    This saves:
    $4.58 in 2x4's
$9.365 in MDF OR $11.44 in sanded pine plywood

Also, it should be known that I was only able to find BEHR black pre-mixed paint.

  8. I posted some other info about the walls in the wall post, just making sure people realize it's there.

  9. I just did a second budget for pedestals that are bare (2x4's visible) up to 27" off the ground.

Our cheapest option in this case is:
    Polyurethane on pine: $172.90

  10. You can take a couple of 3/4"mdf panels that are cheap and cut 4 panels with 45s on the joints and then a top with 45s all around, glue it, brad nail it, then paint it with Kills or somethining else very cheap. About as professional as your going to get and not nearly 180 bucks. I have one you can use and use as reference for building the others.

  11. it's sturdy enough without a frame?

  12. All that would cut out is the 2x4 cost. without those, the mdf would have to be full to the floor, and the ceapest option there is
169.14, and that's without a top coat of paint, rollers, trays, ect. Just the luumber and primer.

  13. I've been pretty freaking thorough.

  14. I have done this many times. You can buy a sheet of 3/4" mdf for around 30$. and yes ethan, it is extremely sturdy. If you want I can bring my pedestal up to school today around 1 - 1:30 and show it to you.

  15. i'm not sure what time i'll be able to make it to campus today. probably not until tonight. but i trust you if you say it's good. i think mike did one like that too. it's probably the best option for cutting cost

  16. well I'll bring it anyways. Audra Ill leave it by rachels stuff in the ceramics studio after my class today. Its scratched up from me working on it, but it just needs to be sanded and painted.

  17. As for walls, Haxton is giving us 6 boards of sheetrock, and I think he had about 4-6 2x4's. He showed me his stash real quick...I can double check.

  18. I have no 3d work, so this is simply my uneducated comment, BUT: Do we need 12 pedestals? Cant more than 1 piece fit on each pedestal?

  19. There will be more than one piece on each pedestal. 3 pedestals per person is a good amount for this show. Depending on size, and without over crowding, they'll be able to fit about 3 pieces on each. You can't shove everything together. I think 12 pedestals is very reasonable.

  20. OK, with 16' I plan on putting up 9 images, so its only fair that you guys be able to put up a similar amount of work.

  21. i plan on one piece per pedestal. i don't have a large volume of sculptures that i want to display. quality over quantity ;)
