Great News!

Theo talked to Mark Price this morning about money available to us as a class. We were entitled to $300 but he gave us approval for $500! This money has to be spent at Home Depot and all in one purchase, so we will need a thorough price/supply list first, so let's get on it. i would have posted this under the construction thread but i wanted to be sure everyone saw it.
by the way mike and i posted a proposal for wall layout & design. i didn't make it to scale it turns out so i'm reworking it now and will post in a little bit with images

  1. here is the current wall design and layouts. if you saw the last image, there is now much more space and so it's a lot less cramped. this should be as to scale as we're going to get it. pedestals have not been accounted for on here yet.

as for the wall design, yellow is 2x4s and blue is drywall. here is what we'll need by this design:

double wall - can fit 8 pieces (4 on each side):
    2x4s - 22 8' pieces
    Sheetrock - 4.5 8' pieces

single wall - can fit 4 pieces (2 on each side):
    2x4s - 14 8' pieces
    Sheetrock - 2.5 pieces

Please feel free to improve the design.

  2. Looks good! I suck at math and anything involving measuring so I trust you on that. I'm excited to start building! When will be able to start getting supplies, and how will we be transporting them?

  3. $500! :D Hot shit, this is awesome. We will have to thank Mark Price.

Ethan, thanks for changing the scale of the walls. I wasn't sure if you wanted them that long or not but it does seem a lot less cramped now.

Kara, when can we pick up that stuff from Haxton?

Also, I assume we'll be recruiting those people with trucks for transportation.

  4. what else can we be doing in the meantime?

  5. I feel like the walls on the Jefferson side of the building should be perpendicular to the street, not parallel, that way they dont block the view from outside the building.

  6. plus the existing lighting works better if it is perpendicular

  7. actually i just looked at it again and its not bad at all. I guess once we have the walls up we can decide if a few of them should be turned

  8. Yes, who was the one or two that said they have a trailer we can use???

  9. With the current design for the new walls, hom much wall space does that give us? Also for the designs of the wall, does the drywall (or whatever) go all the way to the floor, covering everything, or are 2x4s visible?

  10. the 2x4s at the bottom are visible. if you want it all the way to the ground, we'll be doubling the price we pay for drywall. it's not as pretty but we'll probably have to settle for it.

i agree regarding shifting walls around. the diagram basically just illustrates that we will have plenty of room to work with, especially if we end up not needing as many walls.

here is how i figured the wallspace:
the blue walls in the picture show the existing walls i think we will probably use. this could be more or less, but going by them, we have a total of 65' of existing space. it's a low estimate. we can always use the pillars as well. if all 20 of us were to display 4 pieces, with about 4 feet of linear space for each piece to occupy, each of us would need 16' of linear space. 16' x 20 people = 320'. subtract from that the existing walls 320'-65' = 255'. This could be created with 16 x 8' walls, 8 x 16' walls or any combination of the two. i figured going half and half would give some variety. this is a high estimate. not all of us need walls, or 16' of wall space. unless each person says how much they need we're going to have to keep on estimating.

  11. I think we should be able to use more than just 65' of existing space. There is the long wall above the 29' one, across from Jefferson. That has to be at least 20'. Also, each pillar must be 2.5-3' wide. I think we could probably put some art on those maybe. Like maybe one person could take all the pillars or something *shrugs*

I also think the 11' one wasnt THAT close to the pillar, probably 5-6' out, which is pretty decent.

About the built walls, is there some cheap way we could cover the bottoms? Perhaps some black cloth running across? How much does each sheet of drywall cost?

Also, will we be able to hang our artwork straight to unsupported drywall? Wont any anchors just rip out of that? I know with my frames the art is getting rather heavy.

  12. Someone else I believe also said they have a trailer, but my Gramps has one. He lives just down the street from me strangely enough. Its not definite but he might let us use it if need be.

  13. For pedestals:
we can have 12 pedestals for approx. $118.25.

The ones drawn up are 16"x16"x36", and can have tops varying in size from 16"x16" to 24"x24".

If anyone wants to see the new plans for these, let me know (941)224-6267 or drop by ceramics.

We need to start building ASAP!!!!

  14. yeah pillars can be used, but i don't hear anyone volunteering to use them yet so...we can't count on it. i think we could use part of that wall near the garage but there are some pylons near the garage door that just wouldn't be attractive near our stuff. i think somebody, maybe jasmine, quoted the drywall at 5.88 a sheet a few posts ago. you might be able to find some cheap thin material to drape the bottom but i don't know if you could find any cheaper than that. the plans have 2x4 studs in the center of each 4' section of the walls for hanging from. if someone needs something more than that, i'm sure we can figure it out at building time.

  15. I looked at the plans, and I see 2x4s running vertically around the center, is that what you are talking about? If it is I think having the studs run vertical is a bad idea. It means we can only have images hanging in those locations. If the 2x4 runs horizontally, then everybody's art is lined up, but spaced however they need. My frames, for example, are 16"x20" On the design it looks like the studs are 4' apart. That would mean I could only put 4 pieces in the show before I use up my allotted 16'

Please let me know if I am interpreting the design put up incorrectly.

  16. no we can do that but i think for the integrity of the wall we should keep the vertical stud there. 2x4s sometimes like to bow. we would just have to add an extra 8' 2x4 for the short wall and 2 for the long. but i agree that might be better
